Section XI. Cylinder Block and Engine End Plates
Cylinder block Is a one piece casting which forms main structural part of engine. Transverse webs provide
rigidity and strength and ensure alignment of block bores and bearings under load.
Block Is bored to receive replaceable wet-type cylinder liners. A water jacket surround upper half of each
cylinder liner. Water Jacket and air boxes are sealed off by a seal ring compressed between liner and a groove In block.
Camshaft and balance shaft bores are located on opposite sides, near top of engine block.
Upper half of main bearing supports are cast Integral with block. Drilled passages in block carry lubricating
oil to all moving parts in engine.
Endplate. A flat steel plate Is bolted to rear ends of cylinder block to provide a means for attaching flywheel
housing, timing gears and balance weight covers.
