3-46. DIATOMITE FILTER ELEMENTS.
a.
General. Each filter contains six filter elements (fig. 3-26) which use diatomaceous earth (diatomite) as a filter
medium to remove fine particles from coagulated water. Backwashing usually removes all the diatomite and foreign
matter from the filter elements, but if it does not the elements must be removed and cleaned. The condition of the filter
elements may be observed through the windows in the filter housings. Replace or remove an element if it is cracked or
damaged.
WARNING
If possible, use filtered water for washing the filter housing, cover, and elements. Never use gasoline or
other solvent.
