b. Check water pump belts for damage,
Belts damaged,
fraying, improper wear, and correct tension
frayed, worn.
CAUTION
When belt replacement Is necessary, belts
must be replaced In complete, matched sets.
Never replace only one belt. The new belt will
carry all the load and fall rapidly.
1) To check belt tension, press down on
the longest unsupprted length of the belt
without using undue exertion. Normal
tension should allow the belt to be
depressed approximately 3/8 in. Adjust
belt tension, as required as follows:
(a) Loosen adjusting setscrews and
bracket support bolts.
(b) Move the alternator or water pump
to obtain the correct belt tension.
Hold in correct position.
(c) Tighten the adjusting setscrews.
2) To replace water pump belts:
(a) Loosen the adjusting lever
setscrews and bracket support
bolts. Pivot the alternator/water
pump towards the cylinder block
b) Turn the engine by hand to work
the belts of the pulleys.
(c) Remove and replace the belts.
(d) Reverse the process for refitting
the belts on the pulleys.
