3-31. FUEL INJECTION PUMP AND GOVERNOR REPLACEMENT/REPAIR (CONT)
NOTE
Tdc tool will hold intake valve open 1/4 in.

Remove screw from top of timing gear cover.
7 Install fabricated pointer and timing gear cover screw.

Turn crankshaft left until piston lightly contacts valve.

Using pointer and pencil, mark crankshaft pulley.

Turn crankshaft right until piston lightly contacts valve.

Using pointer and pencil, mark crankshaft pulley.

Mark pulley half way between two reference marks. This mark will be tdc.

Aline 0° on degree decal with tdc mark. Attach decal to V-belt pulley.

Turn crankshaft left until piston lightly contacts the valve.

Record the reading on decal at reference pointer.

Turn crankshaft right until piston lightly contacts the valve.

Record the reading on decal at reference pointer.

Reading in step 15 and 17 should be the same number of degrees from tdc. If it is not, repeat steps 8 thru 17.

Remove screw from tdc tool.

Remove valve cover screw from tdc tool. Remove tool.
NOTE
There are two tdc's with the 0° tdc alined with the pointer. Tdc exhaust is seen by movement of both intake and exhaust
valve rocker arms. The push rods are tight. Tdc compression has no movement of the intake and exhaust valve rocker
arms. The push rods are loose and the pointer is at 0° tdc.

Turn crankshaft so that it will read 40° before tdc compression.
