TM 5-4610-223-12
2.
Set left variator feed indicator FEI-5 (3, fig. 2-15) at zero reading.
3.
Open control valve CV-32 (2), on filtered water effluent line at inlet of diatomaceous earth feeder.
4.
Partially close control valve CV-51 (3, fIg. 2-26) on filter water line to storage tanks to allow back
pressure on line to filter.
5.
Fill with water until level of water reaches upper high level marker inside slurry feeder tank
(approximately 14 gallons of water).
6.
Close control valve CV-32 (2, fig. 2-15) and fully open control valve CV-51 (3, fig. 2-26) on filter
water line of storage tank.
7.
Open charging door (4, fig. 2-15) and add 7 pounds of diatomaceous earth to compartment on left
side of slurry feeder. Close the charging door (4).
8.
When slurry has been thoroughly mixed, set the left-hand variator feed indicator FEI-5 (3) at 30 ppm
dosage.
NOTE
An aluminum measure is provided for measuring diatomaceous earth. This measure is graduated from
1/2 pound to 1 pound in 1/2 pound increments.
(e)
Allow storage tanks to fill with filtered water.
NOTE
To fill both storage tanks, open the 2-inch gate valve in the hose line between the two tanks.
(f)
When there is no demand for filtered water (as when all water storage tanks are full) but it is desired to
maintain the coating on the elements, do not shut down the filters. Turn the effluent plug control valve CV-46 (5, fig. 2-
23) to R (Recirculate) position. Reduce the setting of the flow controller valve CV-45 (6) to a 10-gpm rate which will hold
the coating on the elements.
