EngineDisassembly and Assembly7. Put clean engine oil on thrust bearing (7) for the rearmain bearing. Install the thrust bearing with theidentification "BLOCK SIDE" toward the cylinder blockand the tabs on the thrust bearings in the machined areain the cylinder block. Tabs (6) will not let the thrustbearings be installed backward.8. Install main bearing caps (5), and tighten the bolts asin Steps 6b and 6c.9. Check the crankshaft end play with tooling (D) asshown. The end play is controlled by the thrust bearingson the rear main bearing. End Play with new bearings is0.064 to 0.368 mm (.0025 to .0145 in.). The maximumpermissible end play with used bearings is 0.64 mm(.025 in.).10. Pull the connecting rod and piston assemblies intoposition against the crankshaftNOTE:Install the connecting rod bearings dry when theclearance checks are made. Put clean engine oil on theconnecting rod bearings for final assembly.11. Install lower half of the rod bearing (8) in theconnecting rod cap with the tab in the back of theconnecting rod bearing in the tab groove of theconnecting rod and cap.NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft when Plastigauge (C)is in position.119
