NOTE
Check to make sure stud does not protrude into inner bore of plug.
Install washer (9) on plug (7) and install stud (15), washer (14) and nut (13).
NOTE
Hand tighten plug until it bottoms.
Install plug (7) into head (3).
Place gasket (12) on plug (11) and install plug in cylinder head (3).
Install elbow (5) on head (3) and install preformed packing (6) on elbow (5).
Position cylinder head (3) on cylinder (17) so intake filter elbow (5) is toward the other cylinders.
Install four washers (2), nuts (1) and torque nuts to 9 ± 3 ft-lbs. (12 ± 4 Nm).
b. Assemble Third Stage Components:
NOTE
Make sure that gaps in piston rings are not directly above piston pins. Gaps in
adjacent rings must be at least 90° apart.
NOTE
All four piston rings are identical and must be installed with the TOP mark facing
upward.
(1) Use a piston ring expander to install piston rings (16, Figure 2-81) on piston (15). All four rings are identical and
must be installed with the TOP mark facing upward.

(6)
Compress rings (16) and install piston (15) into cylinder (11) allowing clearance to install piston pin (14).
Install studs (17) and position gasket (12) on cylinder (11).
Turn the crankshaft to expose piston (15) to the maximum distance above crankcase.
Install piston (15) on connecting rod and secure with piston pin (14) and two snap rings (13).
Clamp cylinder(11) to crankcase with a force of 6 to 12ft-lbs. (8 to 15 Nm) and measure from top of piston (15)
to top of cylinder. With piston (15) at top dead center, piston should be between 0.005 and 0.007 in. (0.1 5 to 0.20 mm)
below top of cylinder. Adjust with gaskets under cylinder as necessary.
(7) Install cylinder head (10).
(8) Install four washers (9) and nuts (8) and torque to 9 to 12 ft-lbs. (8 to 15 Nm).
(9) Install new preformed packing (7) on discharge valve (5).
(10) Install discharge valve (5) in deeper of two bores in cylinder head (10).
(11 ) install new preformed packing (7) on inlet valve (6) and install in other bore in head (10).
(12) Install two studs (4), if removed.
(13) Install flange (3) over studs (4).
(14) Install two washers (2) and nuts (1) on studs (4). Torque to 4 ± 1 ft-lbs. (6 ± 2 Nm).
c. Assemble Second Stage Components:
(1) Refer to Figure 2-80, Carefully rotate crankshaft by hand to bring the second stage piston rod to its uppermost
position. Install piston (25) and secure with piston pin (24) and snap rings (23).
(2) Install gasket (21), cylinder (20) and preformed packing (22).
(3) Install new preformed packing (18) on sleeve (17) and install stud (19), if removed.
(4) Assemble the two parts of floating piston assembly(17) and insert the bottom part in cylinder (15).
(5) Install stud (16) and cylinder (15).
