CAUTION
V-ring (smooth surface) must be placed between the two V-rings (textured surface)
when installing the packing into stuffing box.
l. Lubricate a V-ring (27) with glycerine. Place it in the stuffing box, open side up.
m. Place V-ring (27A) in the stuffing box, open side up. Place the remaining black V-rings in the stuffing box.
n. Install packing ring (28) and ring (29).
0. Install spring (30) and throat ring (31).
CAUTION
Do not use excessive force to install plunger. Damage to packing or plunger could
result.
p. Lubricate plunger (24) with glycerine. Insert plunger through nut (33). Approximately 2-1/2 in. (64 mm) of the
plunger should extend past the end of throat ring (31) on the opposite end of the stuffing box.
q. Wipe the stuffing box bores in valve housing (52) to be sure they are clean before installing stuffing box (22)
r. Install new preformed packing (23) on stuffing box (22).
CAUTION
Do not force the stuffing box into the stuffing box counterbores in the housing.
Stuffing box should slide in easily. Forcing the stuffing box could cause damage to the
housing and stuffing box.
CAUTION
Be careful not to allow the preformed packing to slip out of its groove, Also, be carefuI
not to damage the plunger while installing the stuffing boxes.
s. Install the stuffing box on studs (32) with the plunger rod as far to the rear as possible. This gives the maximum
amount of room and simplifies assembly.
t. Secure the stuffing box (22) to housing (52) with washers (21) and nuts (20). Hand tighten nuts (20) at this time.
u. Install shield (25) on plunger (24).
v. Turn the pump by hand so the plunger rod (not shown) moves forward and touches plunger (24).
w. Install plunger clamp assembly (19). Be careful to keep the gap between the upper and lower parts of the clamp
the same on both sides while tightening the two plunger clamp capscrews to 5 ft. Ibs. (7 Nm).
x. Tighten two nuts (20) in the following sequence:
(1) Tighten both nuts to 10 ft. Ibs. (14 Nm).
(2) Tighten both nuts to 40 ft. Ibs. (54 Nm).
(3) Tighten both nuts to 125 ft. Ibs.(169 Nm).
y. Tighten nut (33) with spanner wrench until it bottoms out.
z. Install access cover (18, sheet 2) and secure with thumbscrews (17).
aa. Install valve seat (16, sheet 1). The seat must be held above the bore in housing (52) and carefully dropped so that
it enters its tapered bore in the housing and seats so that it can not be removed easily, by hand. Then, tap it into place
with a brass bar and three or four light taps with a hammer.
