DE-ICING OPERATIONS
Use lower spray bar with de-icing extensions (WP 0024 00) installed, as required, to de-ice runways, roads, and landing
zones:
WARNING
Use caution when operating machine with de-icing extensions installed. Extension attachments increase
width of machine by 8 ft (2.4 cm) on each side. Stop all oncoming traffic in the vicinity of de-icing opera-
tions. Operator must be alert for obstructions and allow sufficient room for clearance. Failure to follow this
warning may result in damage to equipment or injury to personnel.
a.
Add de-icing extensions to lower spray bar.
WARNING
Do NOT handle any substance, to be added to water distributor tank, without first reading manufacturer's
handling precautions as printed on label. Wear appropriate protective gear, as required by safety and medical
personnel. Do NOT increase concentration of substance used. Do NOT smoke, as some compounds may be
flammable. Failure to follow this warning may cause injury or death to personnel or damage to equipment.
CAUTION
NEVER use salt-based de-icing agents in water distributor tank. Salt-based compounds may cause tank cor-
rosion.
b.
Fill tank with appropriate de-icing agent mixed with water.
c.
Travel to job site. Use appropriate gear speed and engage differential lock, if driving conditions are icy.
d.
When ready to begin spraying de-icing agent, engage differential lock, if not already engaged.
NOTE
Making several passes to discharge de-icing solution is preferable to making one pass, where application is
e.
Spray de-icing agent, using pressure discharge from lower spray bar procedures (WP 0005 00). Make successive
passes and ensure an appropriate overlap of coverage. Monitor results and adjust coverage volume as needed: too
heavy an application will result in flooding or formation of puddles, and will be a waste of material; too light an
application will not achieve desired results.
CAUTION
Do NOT leave machine after operation without flushing/rinsing tank, if tank amendments were used during
mission. Tank must be clean and dry to ensure effectiveness of subsequent operations. Improper cleaning
will result in accumulation and build-up of amendments in tank. Premature failure or damage to plumbing or
pump may result. Effectiveness of amendments used may also be reduced.
f.
Be sure to flush and rinse, drain, and dry tank (WP 0005 00) after de-icing operations are completed. Ensure de-
icing extensions and nozzles are cleaned.
