DUST CONTROL OPERATIONS
Introduction.
1.
a.
Dust is a worldwide problem and is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Dust obscures the
sunlight and helps cause global warming. It causes inhalation hazards to people as well as maintenance concerns
for equipment working in dusty environments. Congested airfields without dust control result in hazardous flying
conditions due to poor visibility.
b.
Dust is created at job sites because of the movement of heavy equipment on exposed soil.
c.
Dust control to meet EPA regulations is achieved by spraying water mixed with dust palliatives over surfaces with
exposed soil. Dust control works by precipitating (or "washing") the dust out of the air and causing particles to
adhere to each other, like a "glue". Although water alone can be used to control dust, the addition of a dust pallia-
tive achieves more time-efficient and long-lasting results.
d.
A variety of compounds are available, depending on the desired results. Chose dust palliatives that are available
through local purchase.
e.
Dust palliatives can also serve as soil stabilizers; there are products available that achieve both dust control and
soil stabilization.
