2-104. VALVE ADJUSTMENT (CONT)
a. Finding Top Dead Center (TDC)
NOTE
Timing screw is kept in storage on left side of engine. It can be installed at left or right side of
engine. There are two threaded holes in flywheel. These holes are in alinement with plugged
holes on left and right of flywheel housing. Holes in flywheel are at different distances from
center, so timing screw cannot be installed in wrong hole.
1
Remove plug from left or right timing hole.
2
Remove timing screw from storage location.
NOTE
Rotation direction is that seen from flywheel end of engine.
3
Slowly turn engine left until timing screw can be screwed into threaded holes of flywheel. If flywheel hole is
turned slightly past the flywheel housing hole, turn flywheel so that hole is at least 300 past housing hole. This
removes play from timing gears.
4
Remove front valve cover (para 2-103).
5 Check valves of No. 1 cylinder. Valves should be closed and rocker arms free.
6
If timing screw can be inserted in flywheel and No. 1 cylinder valves are closed, No. 1 cylinder is at tdc.
