POWER TAKEOFF REPAIR (CONT)NOTEBearings and bearing races mounted on drive shaft may be heated in an oven or oil bath not toexceed 300°F.4Install rear bearing cup in power takeoff housing.5Use a mandrel or piece of steel pipe with outside diameter slightly smaller than race outside diameter. Seatrace in housing.6Install two pipe plugs rear of power takeoff housing. Torque plugs to 7.5-10 ft lb.NOTEDust lip of seal should face to rear. Lubricate seal with engine oil (MIL-L-2104) prior to installation.7Press or tap rear oil seal in rear of power takeoff housing until rear casement of seal is flush with rearhousing.8Press two bearing races onto drive shaft. Seat bearings against collar on shaft.9Press inner bearing race onto driveshaft. Seat inner bearing race against shoulder.10Set power takeoff housing on work bench with input end facing upward. Support with wooden blocks.CAUTIONTo prevent damage, be very careful when power takeoff drive shaft enters rear oil seal.11Install power takeoff driveshaft in power takeoff housing.12Press front bearing race in place on front of driveshaft bearing.NOTEPerform steps 13 thru 16 to compute bearing free play and select a shim pack, usually containingtwo shims.3-181
