TOP LOADING (PRESSURE FEED) - CONTINUED
d.
Remove padlock, release latch, and open access cover.
WARNING
DO NOT begin to top load by pressure feed unless free end of hose at access cover opening has been firmly
secured. Feed hose is under pressure. Consider available water pressure and size of hose connected. The
higher the pressure, the more crucial it is to secure free end of hose at tank. Failure to follow this warning
may cause end of hose to whip free and cause serious injury or death to personnel or damage to equipment.
e.
Ensure personnel manning hose has a firm grip on hose BEFORE water flow is turned on.
f.
Turn on water source. Fill tank until desired capacity is reached.
g.
Turn off flow of water. Remove hose from tank.
h.
Close access cover, secure with latch, and install padlock.
TANK MIXING OPERATION
WARNING
Operation of the 613CWD Water Distributor must comply with applicable regulations of the Code of Fed-
eral Regulations (CFR) Title 40, Protection of Environment, of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA). Failure to comply with EPA regulations may endanger the lives of personnel operating or working
near the water distributor or may harm the environment. For further information contact the EPA online at
http://www.epa.gov or write to: Environmental Protection Agency, Ariel Rios Building, 1200 Pennsylvania
Avenue, N.W., Mail Code 3213A, Washington DC 20460, (202) 272-0167.
1.
General Information.
a.
A variety of compounds (amendments) can be added to water inside tank, mixed to create a uniform solution, and
then discharged from tank. These amendments fall into three categories:
(1)
Dust Palliatives. These chemicals act as wetting compounds. They control dust by precipitating dust parti-
cles out of suspension in the air and causing particles to stick together, like "glue". Although a measure of
dust control can be accomplished with water alone, dust control is most effective and long lasting when
dust palliative compounds are used.
(2)
Soil Stabilizers. These compounds enhance the soil's ability to be compacted. They increase the hardness
of the compacted layer and/or decrease the time needed to develop a fully compacted surface. A variety of
soil stabilizers are available, depending on soil stabilization results required.
CAUTION
NEVER use salt-based de-icing agents in water distributor tank. Salt-based compounds may cause tank cor-
rosion.
(3)
De-icing Agents. These agents are used to melt ice from runways, landing strips, roads, etc. Do NOT use
salt-based de-icing agents.
b.
A supervisor must select an appropriate amendment for the required mission. These amendments will be available
through local purchase and maintain and follow the MSDS requirements.
c.
A supervisor must then obtain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on the amendment to be used. MSDS are
available through the manufacturer or through the Occupational Safety and Heath Administration (OSHA). Safety
and medical personnel must review this data and determine appropriate protective gear (gloves, eye protection, fil-
ter-type mask, etc.) required when handling compound. The supervisor must maintain all MSDS and ensure MSDS
requirements are followed.
