3-76. PISTON AND CONNECTING ROD REPLACEMENT/REPAIR (CONT)
NOTE
Make sure tabs in back of bearings are in tab grooves of connecting rod and cap.

Lubricate crankshaft journal and upper and lower bearing halfs with engine oil (MIL-L-2104).

Install lower half of bearing in connecting rod caps.

Place 0.039 solder wire on bearing.
NOTE
Make sure cylinder numbers on rod cap and rod are the same and are on the same side of
connecting rod.

Slowly pull connecting rod onto crankshaft.

Install rod cap.

Install two nuts. Torque each nut to 54-66 ft lb.

Mark nuts and cap.

Tighten nuts an additional 115-125° from mark.

Remove rod cap nuts.

Remove solder wire.

Measure thickness of wire. Thickness should be 0.0022-0.0034 in. for new bearings. Maximum clearance with
used bearings is .010 in.

Apply clean oil (MIL-L1-2104) on lower half of bearing.

Repeat steps 9 thru 12.
NOTE
Repeat procedure for all connecting rod bearings to be replaced.

Install oil pump (para 3-72).
18 Install cylinder head (para 3-64).
